Charles Henry Esson III, who goes by Chase, is a Jamaican smuggler and fixer renowned for his fearlessness and keen marksmanship. His story intersects Baker’s campaign when a spiritual quest sends him to Rockay City and an inauspicious introduction from the Gemini entwines their fates.
Story
Back in Jamaica, Chase’s life unravels and his cocaine addiction intensifies. He consults the Priest, who explains that a the Witch has cursed him, and only killing her will heal his affliction. The Priest furnishes him with a potion and sends him to America to trade with the East Men, obtain guns and a passport, and track down the Witch. Chase seeks assistance from the Gemini, pilots in Rockay City and collaborators in his smuggling business.
By chance, Baker has commissioned the Gemini for a heist: Gloves’s plan to steal the Dragon Dogs involves airlifting them out of the Imperial Bank’s skylight. Instead of cash, they request a favor: escort their friend Chase into the city. Chase and Manolo alight in a mangrove and rendezvous with Jake, who conveys them safely to the Stallion Club.
However, the Gemini aren’t satisfied: Chase has no documentation, so his status in Rockay is tenuous. Nasara dispatches Eduardo, Jake, and Martinez oversee his deal with the East Men; wary of Chase’s violent and unstable condition, he instructs Eduardo to make the exchange. The meeting literally blows up, killing Eduardo and leaving Chase and the Graves fighting for their lives. Chase’s quick thinking and firearms expertise prevail; he escapes with the rest of Nasara’s men and a further-buttressed reputation for lethality, fully convinced the Witch is responsible for his misfortunes.
Satisfied, the Gemini lend Baker their services gratis, and Chase—lacking resources in his hunt for the Witch—volunteers to join Baker’s crew.
