Danger Close is the second mission in Ranger’s story. In his second nightmare about his service in Vietnam, he relives the first time he encountered the Red Star, when his squad extracted it from a Viet Cong bunker.
Strategy
Move into the area
After only a few steps toward the location, several Viet Cong soldiers ambush Ranger and his squad. He should push past them over the bridge, eliminating the Viet Cong guarding it.
Locate the bunker
The bunker door lies to the left of the bluff, on the side of the hill opposite Ranger. He can proceed directly over it or rotate counterclockwise until he reaches the entrance.
Blow the bunker door
Ranger has the explosives necessary to destroy the door. After they detonate, he should breach with caution, since several Viet Cong lie in wait.
Locate the case
After he eliminates the Viet Cong in the bunker, Ranger should take the ladder down into the tunnel system beneath. One more Viet Cong conceals himself in an alcove just beyond the ladder and ambushes Ranger as he passes, and several more confront Ranger in the tunnels. The path resembles a labyrinth more than a maze, though, so he can fight his way through to the Star with relative ease.
Retrieve the Red Star
Exit through the tunnels
Ranger should take care while ascending the ladder out of the tunnels, since he encounters a few more Viet Cong at the top.
Time to escape
Consequences
Once Ranger escapes with the Star, he wakes up and returns to his life of crime in Rockay City. But just days later, his dreams take him back to Vietnam a third time, when he recalls the helicopter crash that followed the bunker raid.
If Ranger is killed during the bunker raid, he never awakes from his nightmare:
Dead in his sleep—yeah, you know—drugs, drink, or just madness. Heart gave up, for sure. He did not go calmly. Wednesday. May, 1996.
