On Rails is the fourth mission in Cracker’s story. After Cracker secures the Wolf B’s flight path data, the Scientist uses it to locate the Bomb—buried deep in the Arctic. Nasara dispatches Cracker to oversee its excavation and exfiltration.
Strategy
Completing the initial objectives as fast as possible gives Cracker’s backup a better chance of surviving the waves of Spetsnaz. Cracker’s Chopper only has a 20-round magazine, so players may want to switch to semiautomatic to minimize reloads or use his secondary Brescia 92, which reloads faster.
Stay on guard
Cracker begins the mission on a cliff edge; the fall is lethal. Several Spetsnaz appear below, one of whom launches an RPG at Cracker and his compatriot.
Return to base
Signal the submarine
Fix the cable
Players should follow the cable down toward the water.
Signal the submarine
Start the sled
Defend the bomb
Players should quickly kill the Spetsnaz who appear on the ridge and behind the sled, since their numbers can overwhelm Cracker and the Arctic soldiers.
- Occasionally the sled’s engine may flood; Cracker must hold out while it rests, then restart it.
Restart the sled
Hold off the enemies
After he kills the remaining 15–20 Spetsnaz, he can escape by submarine.
Time to escape
Consequences
Completing this mission satisfies the Scientist. He reveals to Nasara that the Nemesis took the briefcase to Tora Bora to sell to Lafoushini at the behest of the CIA. Nasara sends Cracker to intercept the exchange, exact his vengeance and recover the briefcase. If the player fails or ignores the mission, Cracker leaves the campaign for the playthrough, and his story ends.
Trivia
- The mission’s name, “on rails,” is a critique often lobbed at video games with linear progression and little to no exploration. Many of the game’s character missions adopt this modality intentionally.
